Thank you for joining (or considering to join) our community of Medical English learners on Patreon!
This page provides guidance on how to make the most of the exclusive study materials designed to help healthcare professionals and medical students strengthen their language skills.
The self-study materials on Patreon are organised around thematic units. Each unit contains a series of worksheets, with each worksheet focusing on a specific Medical English skill—such as vocabulary, grammar or other essential language skills.
Worksheets typically include both theoretical explanations and practical exercises to reinforce learning. At the end of each worksheet, you will find an Answer Key section with the correct answers for the tasks, allowing you to check your work independently.
Each worksheet has a unique identification number (ID). Use this number to track your progress or reference specific worksheets (e.g., when giving feedback).
New materials are regularly added to the Patreon library. To explore the full collection, use #hashtags to quickly find related study materials, including advanced content or worksheets you may have missed. You can find the hashtags on the cover page of each worksheet.
Many health professionals studied English seriously at school or university. But without regular practice, it is natural for our language skills to become uneven. You might remember advanced structures but forget some of the basics or small grammar rules that are easy to miss if you do not use English often. That is why it can be hard to define your exact proficiency level using standard language proficiency scales (e.g., CEFR).
Instead of focusing on labels, I offer two flexible learning pathways to help you build and maintain your Medical English systematically.
◼ Foundational practice
focuses on core grammar and essential vocabulary
targets those small but critical mistakes that impact clarity
equivalent to CEFR A2–B1 (pre-intermediate to intermediate)
ideal for learners who studied English long ago but have not used it actively, or those who feel uncertain about 'basic' rules despite their strong language knowledge.
◼ Advanced practice
focuses on advanced vocabulary and grammar, complex sentence structures and nuanced communication
prepares you for communication in real-world scenarios (e.g., clinical or business discussions, academic writing, OET/PLAB exam preparation)
equivalent to CEFR B2–C1 (upper intermediate to advanced)
best for learners with a solid foundation who want to develop greater fluency, as well as those working in English-speaking environments who seek to refine their precision and communication style.
NB! Many learners benefit from cyclical review, returning to foundational materials to reinforce accuracy even while tackling extended content.
All worksheets are in English. Do not worry if the instructions feel challenging at first. This is completely normal!
If you need help understanding them, feel free to use translation tools. This is not “cheating”. It is actually a smart way to learn!
Language experts call this 'translanguaging'. It means using all the languages you know to help you understand, remember and use English better.
How to translate worksheets:
Digital (web browser): right-click anywhere → select “Translate” (or use the translation icon in your address bar).
PDFs: to preserve the original layout, search online for “PDF translation tool”. There are many free options available.
Printed/on-screen text: scan with your phone’s camera using apps like Google Translate.
NB! Combine translation with active practice (e.g., re-read the English version after translating) to boost retention.
Whether the materials helped you, you have suggestions for improvement or you spotted something that needs fixing, I would love to hear from you. Every response helps me create more effective resources for our Medical English learning community.
